Lessons from the Pitch: Why You Need a System of Play for Your Small Business

Spend enough time around youth soccer fields and you’ll start to notice a pattern.

Some teams play like teams. They’re spaced out, organized, and purposeful. Even if they’re not the most talented group on the field, you can tell they’ve been coached on how to play — not just how to dribble or shoot, but how to work together. Everyone has a role. Everyone understands where to be and what to do when the ball moves.

It’s not perfect, of course. Mistakes still happen. But when they do, it’s easier to see why — maybe a player hesitated, or maybe the formation didn’t adapt quickly enough. Either way, it’s a learning opportunity. They’re running a system, and that system gives them a path to grow.

Other teams? Not so much.

Sometimes it’s clear the coach only focused on individual skills. Players can pass, shoot, and sprint — but they’re never quite in sync. They bunch up. They’ll over-dribble. They lose the ball in transition because nobody knew what was coming next. There’s no connective tissue — just raw talent, hoping it all clicks when it matters.

And then there’s the team built around a star. One or two standout kids do everything while the rest of the team just tries not to get in the way. They might even win a few games like that. But it’s fragile. Nobody else develops. And the moment that star is absent — or just has a bad game — it all collapses.

It’s easy to see on the field. But the same thing happens in business.

We see companies with high performers who aren’t aligned. We’ve seen leaders trying to scale without structure. We see departments leaning on heroes instead of building systems that let everyone contribute.

That’s why we’re creating The ThreeWill Way Framework — not as a piece of software or a project plan, but as a system of play. A clear, repeatable way to ensure your team knows how to work, where to focus, and why it matters. It’s about helping everyone row in the same direction — so you can spend less time putting out fires and more time moving forward.

Before you invest in a tool, ask yourself:
Does my team how to play together?
