Situation
Cox Communications desired to migrate seven SharePoint 2010 on-premises custom business applications into a SharePoint 2016 on-premises environment.
Solution
ThreeWill partnered with Cox Communications to assess their selected business applications to determine migration strategy, estimates, and timelines for each, as well as identify any potential impacts that may result from the upgrade (e.g., feature changes) with recommendations on how to address any impacts.
Once the application assessments were completed, Cox selected one of the applications for ThreeWill to complete a pilot migration to validate the strategy, estimates, timelines, and impacts. Of note, due to differences between Microsoft’s SharePoint 2010 environment and SharePoint 2016 environment, the migration of the applications required a two-step process: first, migration from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013, and then second, migration from SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2016.
Upon completion of the pilot, and confirmation of the migration strategy, estimates, and timelines, ThreeWill successfully completed the migration to SharePoint 2016 of the seven business applications.
During the project, ThreeWill also assisted Cox in developing a communication plan/strategy to ensure the business owners and users of each application knew:
- Applications were to be migrated
- What, if any, differences may exist in their applications as a result of the migration
- What pre-and post-migration testing/validation would need to be completed by the business to confirm and sign-off on migration success
Business Benefits
Cox Communications was able to bring their business applications up to the current SharePoint on-premise environment, eliminating any potential legacy-version Microsoft SharePoint support issues, as well as then be able to take advantage of new SharePoint 2016 features.
